Bruker Canada

Bruker Canada

On incorporation in 1970 Bruker Canada was a one man company operating from the front room of a house in suburban Toronto. By 1974 the company had moved to a real office but with a separate workshop. In 1976 Martin Smith arrived from our German office to head the Canadian operation with a mandate to accelerate growth. Martin was to dedicate himself to this task over the next 26 years. Certainly the space available was deemed to be inadequate to support further growth and we soon moved the concern to an autonomous facility. By 1978 Bruker Canada had a staff of 5 working out of a suite of offices and workshops in Mississauga - still close to Toronto. Our demonstration capabilities had in the meantime moved from a WP 60 to a WM 250. In fact, until recently, that original WM 250 is still running over 20 years later.

From 1978 to 1982 our sales and staff grew rapidly. By the end of 1982 we were 12 and badly crowded into a little more than 100 sq. metres. This even included end test facilities! The need to move was, therefore, pressing and with the blessing and support of our Chairman and founder, Professor Guenter Laukien we designed, built and in early 1983 moved into the now familiar Milton facility.

From 1983 to the present has seen the growth of the modern era at Bruker Canada. We have added new staff and new capabilities as circumstances and our company-wide product line have mandated. Corporate reorganization and acquisitions accompanied this growth and finally, from 2000 onwards necessitated the need to incorporate a group of companies to better address the diverging needs of the life sciences industry whilst maintaining the cohesion of a overall corporate responsibility. Referred to internally as Bruker.Ca, this group consists of Bruker BioSpin Ltd which covers NMR, NMR Medical products and EPR, Bruker Optics Ltd responsible for FTIR, FTRaman and minispec, Bruker Daltonics which handles all MS products and Bruker AXS Ltd which covers XRay products, both single crystal and powder.

In 2002 Martin Smith retired as Executive VP of Bruker.Ca and after many years as Martin’s right hand, Henry Stronks took on the mantle of stewardship of the Canadian group.
