Terahertz light has remarkable properties. Many common materials and living tissues are semi-transparent and have 'terahertz fingerprints`, permitting them to be imaged, identified, and analyzed. Moreover, the non-ionizing properties of terahertz radiation and the relatively low power levels used, indicate that it is safe.

Since the launch of the World`s first commercially available turn-key Terahertz spectrometer system in 2004, TeraView created a number of products to help harness the unique properties of Terahertz Radiation. A long lasting cooperation between Bruker and TeraView has contributed to the implementation of the technique in various applications. Based on the TPIā„¢ core system, the product range can easily be configured to produce a fixed-installation scanner with a fixed aperture, a more mobile probe device, or a Terahertz spectrometer.

By applying different software analysis packages, the same base technologies can be brought to bear to a wide range of applications; including drug discovery and formulation; medical and dental diagnostics; security screening, explosives detection and contraband detection. In cases of the above mentioned applications where no phase information is needed, FTIR technology  can serve as an economically attractive  alternative solution and the spectral information down to
5 cm-1 (=0.15 THz) can be collected e.g. with Bruker VERTEX 80v  FTIR vacuum spectrometers
