ONH Inert Gas Fusion, diff. H by Hot Extraction - Application Training

About the training

This training course is designed for new and existing users of the G8 GALILEO or G4 PHOENIX inert gas system family. The course covers the theoretical fundamentals, sample preparation techniques as well as methods of qualitative and quantitative analysis. At the end of the training the attendee knows the theoretical and practical fundamentals for a reliable day by day usage of such inert gas fusion (ONH) or hot extraction (dH) analyzers.


Course Outline and Agenda

Day 1, 11am - 5pm

  • Introduction to "Inert Gas Fusion" analysis (total oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen)
  • Introduction to "Hot Extraction" analysis (diffusible or residual hydrogen)
  • Theoretical background of advanced applications like argon in steel, ONH in refractories, hydrogen in aluminum, oxygen in copper


Day 2, 9am - 5pm

  • Introduction to “Thermal desorption mass spectrometry” (trapped hydrogen)
  • Method setup/development based on applications
  • Different modes of calibration
  • Data collection strategies



  • Preparation for measurement, start-up procedure
  • Performing single- and multi-point calibrations
  • Performing gas dose calibration
  • Analysis of different sample materials (steel, titanium, copper, aluminum, powdered samples)


Day 3, 9am - 3pm


  • Preparation for measurement, start-up procedure
  • Analysis of different sample materials (steel, titanium, copper, aluminum, powdered samples)
  • Maintenance procedures
  • Basic trouble shooting
  • Questions and discussion

Class size

Class sizes are limited, so that each participant receives individual attention and participates in all hands-on activities. Manuals as well as other documentation are provided. Depending on the date, the course will be held in English or German language in Karlsruhe at Bruker AXS GmbH. Early registration is encouraged as registrations are accepted on a first-come/first-served basis.


Attendance Fee

The course price includes course materials, lunch and refreshments. Travel and accommodation are not included.



Registrations cancelled within 10 working days prior to the start of the course are subject to a cancellation fee of 30 %. Registered persons not attending the course without having given prior notice will be fully charged. We reserve the right to cancel a course if there are less than three registrants by the registration deadline.
