Prof. Dr. med. Friedrich Trefz was born on January 20th 1945 in Heidelberg, Germany. After his high school graduation in 1965 he did 2 years of military service before he started with his medical studies in Freiburg and Heidelberg in 1967. After the medical board examination in 1972 he started his research at the Children’s Hospital, University of Heidelberg where he also wrote his medical thesis in 1976. 1983 he received his pediatrician degree and started a habilitation (“In vivo determination of the activity of the phenylalanine hydroxylating system. Relevance of the method for the differential diagnosis of phenylketonuria and its variants"). 2 years later Professor Trefz was nominated as associate Professor for pediatrics and started as head of the pediatric metabolic disease department, where he worked until 1992. Before he started at Kreiskliniken Reutlingen, School of Medicine, University of Tuebingen in 1992 he got a grant from Federal Ministry of Education and Research for “Principal Investigator German Maternal PKU Study. Since April 2015 he is working as senior pediatric consultant at the department of translational medicine, University Childrens Hospital Heidelberg.
