Introduction to Friction and Wear Testing using Bruker UMT TriboLab

October 2-4, 2019 | San Jose, CA

Bruker Nano Surfaces Division, 61 Daggett Drive, San Jose, CA 95134

Course Objectives

This course is an introduction to testing common wear and friction experiments. It includes both theory and lab sessions. The commonly practiced wear test procedures will be introduced and attendees can practice each test on Bruker UMT TriboLabs. Attendees are welcome to bring their own samples to practice on.

The training also includes a two-hour Q & A session where attendees can discuss tribology questions/problems for their specific applications.

Course Outline

Day 1

Basics of hardware and software operation:

  • Introduction to specifications, capabilities and installation procedures for different UMT TriboLab modules
  • Force and torque sensors: Tuning load control parameters, verification and calibration procedures
  • Writing and executing test scripts in the UMT software
  • Analyzing experimental results in the Viewer software

Day 2

Theory, experimental procedure and results analysis will be covered for:

  • Pin-on-disc configuration (ASTM G99) at both ambient and high temperature, Construction of Stribeck Curves, different lubrication regimes
  • Reciprocating ball-on-flat sliding wear (ASTM G133) at both ambient and high temperature
  • Block-on-ring wear (ASTM G77)

Day 3

Theory, experimental procedure and results analysis for:

  • Micro-scratch tests (ASTM C1624)
  • Rockwell Hardness Measurement (ASTM E18)
  • Q & A for specific tribology application questions
