Time-Domain NMR: Basic Principles and Real-World Applications

TD-NMR is an indispensable analytical technique used in quality control and assurance for a wide variety of applications. A distinguishing feature of TD-NMR is that it uses radio-frequency energy, which non-destructively analyzes the entire sample volume. The signals generated can be used to precisely and accurately measure real-world samples with minimal preparation. This seminar will introduce the TD-NMR technique and demonstrate some of these real-world applications. With an understanding of the underlying TD-NMR principles the viewer will also be able to embark on their own novel applications.

What to expect

TD-NMR is an analytical technique that can be readily implemented in analytical laboratories for quality control and assurance of many materials covering the needs of diverse industries. A major hallmark of TD-NMR is high precision of repetitive measurements. Sample preparation can be kept at a minimum and subsequently operator errors can be minimized. Basic principles of TD-NMR will be explained during the webinar in an easy format for non NMR experts.

Quantification of constituents in various materials is dependent on differences in relaxation properties. The different relaxation phenomena in NMR will be presented, relaxation measurements will be demonstrated, and results will be discussed.

The two most frequently used experiments in TD-NMR are Free Induction Decay (FID) measurements and the Spin-Echo experiment. The FID experiment will be used to determine the solid fat content in three reference samples.

The spin-echo experiment is the most frequently used experiment for the quantification of oil and other small flexible molecules in a matrix of fast relaxing solid materials. The echo intensity can be used for calibration of the instrument and subsequently for the analysis of unknown samples. We will show the use of this experiment for the quantification of moisture and oil in canola seeds.
