Fluorite, also known as fluorspar, is a mineral consisting of calcium and fluorine with the chemical formula CaF2. Fluorite has many industrial uses, particularly in the aluminum production and during the production of fluorine, fluorocarbons, and hydrofluoric acid which then further feed into other industrial processes. CaF2 is also used as flux in the steel manufacturing process with the advantage of lowering the melting temperature and therefore reducing energy costs.

As the purity of fluorspar can differ quite substantially, there is a demand for fast and reliable analysis of this mineral. Often, fluorite is determined by analytical techniques such as titration or ion chromatography. However, these wet chemical methods require the samples to be digested with acids which adds both time and cost to the analysis.
