X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry is an analytical laboratory technique used to detect the presence of specified elements in a sample material and subsequently determine the concentration of those elements present.

Samples can be in liquid or solid form and the analysis is non-destructive. The vast majority of elements in the periodic table can be detected from sub-ppm levels up to concentration values in the high percentage range.

This lab report outlines how XRF can be used to accurately and precisely determine the levels of palladium in pharmaceutical powders. A calibration method was developed to carry out the analysis using the Bruker AXS S2 RANGER, an energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometer.
