High Sample Capacity, Non-Contact Inspection Enables Production Roughness and Honing Metrology

The production of engine blocks to exacting industrial standards requires the use of accurate metrology. This enables manufacturers to meet demanding QA/QC requirements, resulting in safer, more efficient engines. Bruker’s NPFLEX 3D Surface Metrology System uniquely addresses this industry need both for sample space and for access to difficult/angled samples.

NPFLEX features a tilting gantry head that allows for ±45 degrees swivel about a horizontal axis of rotation. Surface roughness can be determined accurately and according to all normal industry ISO and ASME standard methodologies for filtering and analysis. Cylinder hone can be perfected in process development and measured carefully and easily in QC operations in order to ensure proper surface preparation for best performance with lubrication and adhesion.

Due to tight tolerances in engine manufacturing, the component cleanliness code supports the understanding of contamination of engine components. Crystallographic analysis aids in the understanding of materials' reaction to stress and temperature. In both cases, Bruker's EDS and EBSD systems on SEM combined with particle analysis are the ideal solution, as well as the Micro-XRF instruments for detailed analysis of particulate matter.

Another important aspect in engine production is the quality control of numerous protective and in some cases decorative coatings. This can be reliably done with Bruker's layer thickness analysis package for the Micro-XRF instrument range.
