There is a wealth of application examples to underline the advantages of energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry on the scanning electron microscope (EDS) and micro X-ray fluorescence analysis (µ-XRF) in the geosciences and mining application fields.

The first part of the webinar will discuss EDS applications and the analysis of drill core samples of the K-Pg boundary, the boundary at the geologic periods Cretaceous and Paleogene. Dinosaurs became extinct during this period around 65 million years ago. Results of the analysis provide further evidence that the reason was the impact of a large asteroid.

The second part of the webinar will focus on µ-XRF analysis with Bruker's M4 TORNADO spectrometer. Again we will look at drill core samples and demonstrate how this instrument can be used to measure large pieces of samples with high speed and high spatial resolution. It will be demonstrated how the collected data can be presented and evaluated and what conclusions can be drawn about the sample nature and how these are applied to mining and other geosciences-related questions.

The EDS section of the webinar will be concluded with analysis results of different ore samples. It will be demonstrated, how advanced analysis options using spectrum imaging as well as automated feature analysis can be used to increase efficiency in exploration and processing.
