Highest sensitivity with MRI CryoProbe

Bruker's MRI CryoProbe with MRI cryocooler increases sensitivity of in-vivo probes by factors of 2.5 to 5.3 compared to standard room temperature RF-coils

Bruker offers the MRI CryoProbe™ for the BioSpec® and PharmaScan® product lines. It features cryo technologies for MRI and MRI cryogen procedures, enabling very low temperature, closed cycle cooled RF-coils and preamplifiers, delivering an increase in sensitivity of in-vivo proven factors of 2.5 to 5.3 over standard room temperature RF-coils in routine MRI applications. Furthermore it opens new signal-to-noise horizons in small animal MRI.

Main Features

  • Increase in sensitivity by an in-vivo proven factors of 2.5 to 5.3
  • Higher spatial resolution and shorter scan times
  • Flexible design for easy siting
  • Cold surface contact with the animal eliminated by monitoring and warming provisions
  • Cooling down outside the magnet
  • All safety requirements with respect to the user and the animal are fulfilled

Technical Details

MRI CryoProbe Technology

Bruker’s MRI CryoProbe uses cryogenic RF coils and preamplifiers cooled by a closed-cycle refrigeration system. Because thermal noise of the RF coil and the associated electronics are comparable to the sample noise in small animal MRI, the coil performance can be significantly improved by a strong reduction of this noise contribution. Bruker BioSpin is the pioneer in the development of CryoProbe technology for high-resolution NMR with over 1,300 CryoProbes installed at customer sites worldwide during the last 14 years.

MRI CryoProbe provides enormous SNR increase compared to standard room-temperature RF coils:

  • Higher resolution in vivo up to 20 µm
  • Shorter measurement times
  • New applications that are not feasible with room temperature coils (high res, fMRI…)
  • Shorter anesthesia durations
  • Studies become more cost effecient due to short measurements times

Easy-to-use CryoProbe Setup

Animal handling and supervision of the MRI CryoProbes is very similar to standard room temperature RF-coils. CryoProbe cooling can be accomplished outside the magnet ensuring optimum usage of the scanner time.

The MRI CryoProbe Family: 4 types to cover all applications

1H Quadrature Transmit/receive MRI CryoProbe for 10.5 cm Gradients and Larger

Bruker offers this MRI CryoProbe™ for the BioSpec®, PharmaScan® and ClinScan® product lines. It delivers an increase in sensitivity of in vivo proven factors of more than 2.5 over standard room temperature RF-coils in routine MRI applications. This 1H quadrature CryoProbe is available from 3 T to 15.2 T.

1H Quadrature Transmit/receive MRI CryoProbe for 6 cm Gradients

This MRI CryoProbe was especially developed for Bruker's mouse scanner with a 6 cm gradient and can be used also in every other BioSpec with a 6 cm gradient insert. This 1H MRI CryoProbe for BGA6S gradients is a standard product from 7 T to 15.2 T.

1H Four-channel phased Array Receive-only MRI CryoProbe for 12 cm Gradients and Larger

Due to the enormous signal gain, dramatic scan time reduction is possible while maintaining the resolution. In comparison with a room temperature 4 channel phased array coil typically a signal-to-noise-gain of 2.6 can be reached. Currently these CryoProbes are available at 7 T and 9.4 T as standard products. Other fields are under development.

X-nuclei MRI CryoProbe with combined 1H Room Temperature RF-coil

The signal-to-noise gain benefits from lower NMR frequencies: the lower the frequency of the nuclei the higher the SNR gain. Therefore signal-to-noise gains of a factor of 5 are possible in 13C measurements. Other X-nuclei CryoProbes are built upon request.
