Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is being explored as an alternative to Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) for microbial typing and outbreak investigations. Two studies will be presented where FTIR was applied to Clostridium difficile isolates from various outbreaks and Candida auris samples to distinguish clades and assess epidemiological relationships in a multicenter outbreak. These studies highlight Bruker’s IR Biotyper® as a fast, cost-effective tool for microbial typing and source tracking, offering a promising alternative to traditional genomic approaches for real-time epidemiology and supporting proactive infection control practices.
