Virtual Panel Discussion - Present and Future of Human Metabolomics ( for Research Use Only)

This webinar took place on January 20, 2021

Virtual Panel Discussion

Webinar Overview

Human metabolomics has seen a rapid rise in the world of Omics and is currently a major source of funding in many countries worldwide.

At present, a lot of emphasis is put also on COVID 19 Research, and Metabolomics will play a substantial role in this as well. NMR is one of the main technology applicable in Human Metabolomics, based on a standardized approach to generate high-quality spectra of human body fluids covering currently urine, plasma, serum, CSF, and methanol extracts from body fluids, tissues, cells.

Join our live Virtual Discussion as our Panelists have shared experiences and different perspectives on NMR-based human metabolomics in the diverse application research areas.

Speakers

Dr. Oscar Millet

Principal Investigator CIC bioGUNE

Dr. Oscar Millet is the group leader of the Precision Medicine and Metabolism group of the CIC bioGUNE. His research focuses on the use of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in the study of biologically relevant proteins and enzymes, paying special attention to the metabolic information that can be extracted from biological samples such as serum and urine. He has been awarded the Real Sociedad Española de Química prize (2004), the Spanish NMR group prize (2005), and the Innovation Award of the Basque Government (2018). He is the scientific founder of the spin-off Atlas Molecular Pharma and is the president of the Spanish Chemical Biology Group.

Prof. Gary Frost

Chair in Nutrition and Dietetics Imperial College London

I am currently head of the Section for Nutrition Research and lead the Imperial Nutrition and Food Network. I qualified as a dietitian in 1982 and have always maintained a clinical input throughout my career. Was appointed to Professor of Nutrition and Dietetics at Imperial College Jan 2008. Prior to this, for 18 years Gary had work at Hammersmith Hospital. Over his time at Hammersmith he gained his PhD in Nutrition and was appointed Honorary Reader in Nutrition at Imperial College, then joined the University of Surrey as Professor of Nutrition and Dietetics in 2005.

Dr. Tone Frost Bathen

Head Professor, MR Cancer Group

As head of the MR Cancer Group, Bathen’s main research interests are focused on personalized medicine and studies of functional and metabolic properties of cancer, using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy (MRS). By developing, optimizing, and applying advanced MR (in combination with other molecular methods) to characterize cancer, the group’s goal is to establish better diagnostic tools for the stratification of patients to treatment and treatment monitoring. Current research activities mainly focus on breast and prostate cancer, enabled by a close collaboration with St. Olav’s University Hospital in Trondheim. Although clinical research has high priority, the broad spectrum of systems for cancer studies provides translational research, covering ex vivo as well as in vivo MRI and MRS of cancer cells and laboratory animals. Bathen’s group also maintains several large biobanks of human tissue and biofluid samples.
