NMR spectroscopy has established itself as one of the most important analytical techniques in chemistry, physics and structural biology for obtaining atomic level information. Analysis of the spectral data provides detailed information on topology, dynamics and the three-dimensional structure of molecules. 

This makes NMR an extremely powerful, versatile analytical technique. However, we all encounter certain experiments that would benefit from higher sensitivity, as NMR detects only differences in populations of energy levels. On the hardware side, the sensitivity of your NMR spectrometer is primarily limited by thermal noise in the signal detection pathway.

By lowering the temperature of the preamplifier and the radiofrequency coil detecting the NMR signals, a reduction in the thermal noise in the receiver circuitry can be achieved.
