Bruker’s Apprenticeship Program – Learning by Doing

For some people, career choices are clear from an early age. Take Dominik Zehnder, one of the current crop of apprentices at our NMR Center of Excellence in Fällanden, Switzerland, for example. As a young teenager Dominik was building radio-controlled model cars, and a technical vocation was clearly calling.

So, how did he end up at Bruker?

"I had heard of Bruker as my uncle works for the company, when the apprenticeship search program started at school, I applied to Bruker." said Dominik.

He continues: "I was impressed on that first day, so I took up the chance to spend two days getting to understand the programme that Bruker runs. I got to know them a little and they could see how I might fit in. I was really pleased and excited to be offered a place as an apprentice electronics engineer."

Now well established in the business - Dominik will complete his apprenticeship in August 2022 - he spends two days each week at school and three days working at Bruker. He has worked across many departments, learning the basics of electronics engineering of course, but also experiencing how the components of our NMR probes are made, assembled, and quality controlled.

Asked about the benefits of his apprenticeship at Bruker, Dominik summed up by saying, "I would recommend Bruker to friends. For me it's been great getting hands-on experience and, at the same time, working towards a highly-regarded qualification - the Berufsmatura. When I finish, I could go straight into work or I can move on to further full-time study. At the moment, I plan to work for a couple of years, then complete my Military Service and maybe study later."

Bruker's apprenticeship program in Switzerland is one way we support young adults as they make their first decisions about a profession. We welcome 6 apprentices each year in the fields of design engineering, electronics engineering, poly-mechanics and production mechanics. Our objective is to enable the development of top professionals and we are immensely proud that many of our apprentices build a long-term career with Bruker when they complete their training.
