Molecular Imaging Using CEST MRI

Due to its strengths like versatility, resolution and soft tissue contrast, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides multiple advantages for Molecular Imaging applications. In particular Chemical Exchange Saturation Transfer (CEST) agents represent a prominent example of MR-based Molecular Imaging probes. One virtue of CEST agents is that their MRI contrast can be turned "on" by choosing the agent`s selective irradiation frequency. Importantly, this feature allows the visualization of different CEST agents in the same setting. The continual improvement of the agents and techniques in recent years makes CEST MRI a promising tool for Molecular Imaging research.

Professor of General and Inorganic Chemistry at the Department of Molecular Biotechnologies and Health Sciences Head of the Center of Excellence on Molecular Imaging of the University of Torino, Italy
Silvio Aime was born in 1948 near Torino, Italy. He received the Laurea degree from the University of Torino in 1971. Following a post -laurea appointment at the University of East Anglia (with R.K.Harris), he returned in 1974 to Torino where he has spent all of his career. He is currently Professor of General and Inorganic Chemistry at the Department of Molecular Bio technologies and Health Sciences. He is head of the Center of Excellence on Molecular Imaging (approved by MUIR in 2001) of the University of Torino. Since the starting of activities (1998) SA has coordinated the activities of the Integrated Laboratory for Innovative Methodologies at the Bioindustry Park del Canavese (Colleretto Giacosa, 50 Km north of Torino). In 2007 he started, thanks to the contribution of the regional government, the new industry -university laboratory dedicated to Preclinical Imaging e quipped with the most advanced imaging technologies (MRI, PET/SPECT, Ultrasound, Optical Imaging). This laboratory is the core facility of the Regional Platform of Medical Imaging that gathers several industries active in Piedmont. He is member of the Edit orial Board of the Journal of Biological Inorganic Chemistry , of Magnetic Resonance in Chemistry and Editor in-chief of the journal “Contrast Media and Molecular Imaging” . He is author of about 600 peer -reviewed papers and 2 6 patents. His main research act ivities deal with the development of Imaging Probes for MR -Molecular Imaging applications (paramagnetic complexes, nanoparticles, CEST agents, targeting and responsive probes , h yperpolarized Para -Hydrogen containing m olecules ). In the last decade, his research activities has been extended to other Imaging modalities (PET, SPECT, OI, CT and US) and , in his lab., it is now common practice the design and testing of multi- modal probes. AWARDS: 1987: Nasini Medal from the Italian Chemical Society; 1996: Medal f rom the Italian NMR Discussion Group; 2000: Sapio Prize; 2004: European Magnetic Resonance Foundation Award; 2010: Award from the European Soc. Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology; 2010: Doctor honoris causa from the University of Debrecen; 2011: Honorary Doctorate from Eindhoven Technical University; 2011: Hans Fisher Senior Fellow, Institute of Advanced Study, Technical University Munich; 2013: Distinguished Professor at the Eindhoven Technical University; 2013: World Molecular Imaging Society 2013 Gold Medal Award; 2013: Fischer Award for Contrast Media Research; 2014: Gold medal “Amedeo Avogadro” from Italian Chemical Society.
