NMR in Quality Control and Manufacturing

Webinar Overview

In this one-hour roundtable, we will discuss the current role of NMR in Quality Control and Manufacturing.

Wednesday 01 September 2021

08:40 PM CEST

Key Topics

  • Why and how NMR is currently used in QC and manufacturing environments
  • The roles of the different parties (regulatory, industry and vendors) involved in increasing acceptance of NMR in downstream environments
  • Are benchtop systems a gamechanger in expanding adoption?
  • Challenges, opportunities, and next steps

Speaker

Yang Liu, PhD

Incubated Project Manager, Digital & Innovation The United States Pharmacopeia

Dr. Yang Liu is quantitative NMR (qNMR) expert and Incubated Project Manager in USP’s Product Quality & Analytical Method Department. Dr. Liu collaborates with scientific experts to bring more qNMR applications into USP, including high-field and benchtop qNMR applications, development of computer-aid methodologies, and compendial qNMR applications. Dr. Liu is a guest scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), concentrating on the evaluation of benchtop (q)NMR instrumentation pharmacopeial applications. Dr. Liu is working with the USP qNMR Expert Panel for updating General Chapters <761> and <1761>. Dr. Liu has been also invited by ISO Working Group (ISO/TC 34/WG 24), in reviewing ISO qNMR standards. Dr. Liu’s scientific expertise includes qNMR method development and validation for measurement of individual molecules and natural products. He has published over 20 peer-reviewed articles and has been an invited speaker or workshop organizer for numerous scientific conferences.

Lorraine Bateman, PhD

Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and NMR Spectroscopist University College Cork

Dr. Lorraine Bateman obtained her degree in Chemistry & Applied Chemistry from NUI, Galway where she also studied for her PhD, graduating in 2006. Her doctoral research was conducted in the area of chiral diamide ligand synthesis and asymmetric catalysis under the supervision of Dr. Simon W. Breeden and Dr. Patrick O’Leary. She subsequently worked as an industrial research chemist in the area of chiral phosphine ligand synthesis with Celtic Catalysts Ltd. She joined University College Cork as a NMR Spectroscopist at the Analytical and Biological Research Facility at University College Cork. In 2014, Lorraine was awarded an SFI Advance Award to pursue independent research in the area of Quantitative NMR Spectroscopy. In 2017, she was appointed as Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

Wim Vermeulen, PhD

Principal Scientist - Janssen Pharmaceutical

Dr. Wim Vermeulen holds his PhD Biomolecular NMR from Ghent University and is the Principal Scientist at the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson. He specializes in the application of NMR spectroscopy tools used in pharmaceutical development and manufacturing. Working at Janssen Pharmaceutica for nearly two decades, Wim is experienced in high resolution liquid state small molecule, peptide, and oligonucleotide NMR including structure elucidation and quantitation for chemical and pharmaceutical process development, quality control of reference materials for production and development purposes and troubleshooting manufacturing issues.
