ASILOMAR, California – April 5, 2025 – Bruker Corporation today announced the launch of a novel compact Q-Band Pulsed EPR Spectrometer, called Compact-Q™ DEER, an innovative advancement in electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technology, during the Joint ENC-ISMAR Conference 2025. This new EPR spectrometer is the result of the 2024 acquisition of the magnetic resonance business of Bridge12, and it offers unparalleled precision in long-range intra-molecular and inter-molecular distance measurements.
The Compact-Q DEER spectrometer features a liquid cryogen-free superconducting magnet, and a state-of-the-art Loop-Gap Resonator optimized for pulsed dipolar spectroscopy (PDS). This innovative technology enables 24/7 operation, while providing highly accurate distance measurements between dipolar-coupled electron spins, such as pairs of nitroxide spin labels, or metal centers in bio-macromolecules. The large bandwidth and high sensitivity make this novel system an indispensable tool for the EPR biophysics and structural biology research community.
DEER distance measurements provide valuable long-range constraints (10-160 Å), with insights that are complementary to other structural methods such as NMR, FRET, X-ray crystallography, or cryo-EM. DEER distance measurements are non-destructive, do not require crystallization and are very sensitive to distance and population changes, providing valuable insights into overall protein fold or conformational changes.
"With the integration of the Bridge12 advanced magnetic resonance technologies, we are very excited to introduce the Compact-Q DEER spectrometer," said Dr. Thorsten Maly, Director of EPR Innovation and Business Development at Bruker. "This novel EPR spectrometer enhances the accuracy of distance measurements and increases throughput, providing researchers with deeper insights. The small footprint and relatively low weight make it suitable for standard lab environments."
Bruker continues to expand its portfolio of EPR solutions, with R&D on enhancing sensitivity and resolution, and the Compact-Q DEER represents a significant step forward.
