Image molecules using CEST MRI: basics and application

Imaging molecules in vivo has a pivotal role in prognosis, diagnosis and monitoring treatments. Chemical Exchange Saturation Transfer (CEST) MRI reveals many endogenous and exogenous molecules in their natural forms and hence provides ample opportunities to address both preclinical and clinical needs, such as in cancers and neurodegenerative diseases.

Prof. Kannie Chan is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at City University of Hong Kong and an Adjunct Faculty at Russell H. Morgan Department of Radiology and Radiological Science, Johns Hopkins University. Her research focuses on the development of biomaterials and imaging approaches to facilitate clinical translations of cancer therapy and cell therapy, and early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases. She developed imaging of glucose using CEST-MRI, which has many implications in diseases in the brain, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Deeper insights into selective CEST-MRI and applications in cancer imaging

CEST-MRI is an emerging molecular imaging technique enabling the detection of biomolecules in vivo with a resolution comparable to conventional MRI. A deeper understanding of the underlying CEST phenomenon allows extracting particular signal components of interest, and thus, the improvement of specificity.

Dr. Steffen Goerke

Steffen Görke heads the CEST imaging research group within the Medical Physics in Radiology Division of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, Germany. His almost ten years of CEST-MRI research spans multiple field strengths (3 T to 14.1 T) and applications ranging from preclinical basic research to clinical application as well as theoretical and analysis methods.

Characteristics of organic compounds producing strong CEST contrast and how to use these for cancer and kidney imaging

CEST MRI is a powerful method to visualize the presence of organic molecules with amplification of their signal through the exchange transfer of signal loss to water. Since the inception of this field, a number of molecules have been identified with appropriate labile protons for producing strong MRI contrast.

Dr. Michael T. McMahon has a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) and is Associate Professor(2012), Radiology, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the F.M Kirby Research Center at Kennedy Krieger Institute. He is chief editor of: “Chemical Exchange Saturation Transfer Imaging: Advances and Applications,” CRC press.
