Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are environmental bacteria commonly found in soil and water throughout the world. They can cause opportunistic infections whose treatment and its duration vary depending on the NTM species causing the infection. Therefore, identification of mycobacteria at the species level is of great clinical relevance. As the symptoms of an NTM infection vary greatly from person to person and can mimic other diseases, a correct diagnosis is often delayed, leading to progressive worsening of the condition and irreversible organ damage. Consequently, rapid and reliable identification of clinically relevant NTMs is essential for effective disease management.
The FluoroType® Mycobacteria VER 1.0 assay offers reliable detection and differentiation of 32 clinically relevant NTM species in a single well. The molecular genetic assay is powered by the innovative LiquidArray® technology, providing high level multiplexing capabilities. The test allows detection of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex alongside identification of 32 specific NTMs, including M. avium, M. kansasii and the different subspecies of the M. abscessus complex. Moreover, additional mycobacterial species are detected at genus level.
Starting with DNA extraction from a positive culture and PCR set-up, amplification and detection are performed by the FluoroCycler® XT. The FluoroSoftware® XT-IVD generates results at a glance, in an easy to use, easy to interpret test report. The streamlined workflow allows NTM determination in just 2.5 hours making the FluoroType® Mycobacteria VER 1.0 assay an indispensable tool for diagnosis of NTMs.
Reliable and rapid differentiation between NTM species is essential for determination of treatment courses, which are species-dependent. The FluoroType® Mycobacteria VER 1.0 assay enables molecular testing of specific NTMs from an extensive set of NTM species in a single well. Providing comprehensive coverage can reduce delays in diagnosis and mitigate the risk of incorrect treatment regimens and unnecessary patient health deterioration.

* Detection signature for M. heckeshornense is similar to that of M. xenopi. While M. xenopi can be reliably identified, specific determination of M. heckeshornense is not possible.
LiquidArray® from Bruker is a next generation multiplexing PCR-based technology. It is underpinned by the unique features of the FluoroCycler® XT – Bruker’s high performance thermocycler. With precise temperature control and no optical cross-talk or colour compensation, assays are designed with a high number of targets per optical channel. LiquidArray® assays are automatically interpreted and reported providing advanced multiplex results at a glance in a familiar, easy to use format.
LiquidArray® brings next generation multiplexing for infectious disease diagnostics to the routine clinical microbiology laboratory.
Starting from positive culture, FluoroLyse is used for DNA extraction and is followed by PCR set-up with FluoroType® Mycobacteria VER 1.0. An internal control is included in each reaction to ensure reliability and validity of results. LiquidArray® amplification and detection is performed with the FluoroCycler® XT and the integrated FluoroSoftware® XT-IVD software provides results at a glance.
