通常利用INADEQUATE（简称为“INAD”）实验来直接确定有机分子的碳链结构。相比之下，其他NMR实验（如1H和1H 13CHSQC）的劣势在于，无法直接提供碳-碳连接的信息，因而只能间接地帮助确定碳链。通过INAD进行的结构解析更直观，所需的波谱解析时间减少，且能避免结构判定时混淆不清。
