Detectors for crystallographic applications require a unique combination of sensitivity, speed, dynamic range, resolution, and detector size. The PHOTON III and PHOTON II detector families take full advantage of very-high-flux X-ray sources.

These revolutionary detectors are offered in the, D8 QUEST ECO, D8 QUEST and D8 VENTURE. All our detectors for single crystal X-ray diffraction feature our unique air-cooled design, which gives you ultimate convenience and reliability, backed by our unmatched three-year detector warranty.


The new PHOTON III series brings us the first pixel array detectors to support both, photon counting and charge integration for the best sensitivity and dynamic range. With no gaps and no charge sharing, the PHOTON III detector delivers the ultimate in laboratory crystallography data quality.

Because at Bruker we don’t believe in a one size-fits-all approach the PHOTON III series offers detectors in two different sizes. The detector active area of each detector is tailored to bring the best performance for your application needs to your laboratory:

PHOTON III - Mixed Mode X-ray Detection

The best crystal structures for publication require X-ray detectors with high signal-to-noise ratios and accurate intensities.

The PHOTON III matches these requirements perfectly, offering mixed mode detection for the first time. Mixed mode detection simultaneously combines photon counting and integration, providing data of ultimate quality for both strong and weak reflections. Conventional photon counting detectors, like HPC or HPADs, suffer from poor linearity and count rate limitations for strong reflections, significantly degrading data quality.

The mixed mode PHOTON III detector eliminates all detector noise, delivering the highest linearity and guaranteeing the highest quality data for your most challenging samples.

The PHOTON III is available in three different sizes because at Bruker we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. The detector active area is tailored to ensure the best performance for your application needs.

  • PHOTON III 7 has an active area of 70 × 100 mm2 it outperforms what many other systems can offer.
  • PHOTON III 14 - active area of 140 × 100 mm2 - is the perfect solution for high-end crystallography solutions.
  • PHOTON III 28 is, with an active area of 140 × 200 mm2 without gaps, the largest photon-counting pixel array detector for the home laboratory.

PHOTON II: The Future of Detection is Now

Every photon diffracted from your sample provides a quantum of information that describes the crystal’s unique structure. Thus, the ideal detector must faithfully record each and every photon in order to preserve this precious information.

The new PHOTON II detector comes very close to this ideal, with speed, sensitivity, and accuracy superior to any other detector available in the home laboratory. By exploiting cutting-edge CPAD technology, the PHOTON II preserves each precious quantum of data to deliver a superior structure in less time.

The PHOTON II detector is available in two sizes. The PHOTON II 7 features an active area of 7 × 10 cm2 while the PHOTON II 14 comes with a monolithic 10 × 14 cm2 sensor. The D8 QUEST ECO, D8 QUEST & D8 VENTURE and a number of in-field upgrades for existing instruments take advantage of these detectors. Our new PHOTON III series introduces mixed-mode detection to the our in-house single-crystal X-ray diffraction solutions, using the technical principles originally developed for high-end synchrotron and XFEL beam lines.
