Exploring Coin Cell Battery Technology with Operando/In-Situ Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy

Lithium Intercalation into Graphite

Operando/in-situ solid-state NMR studies reveal chemical and structural changes in battery materials during operation. By monitoring key nuclei such as ⁷Li, ²³Na, ¹³C, ³¹P, ¹H, and ¹⁹F, researchers can investigate ion mobility, reaction pathways, and phase changes, thereby achieving a deeper understanding and refinement of next‑generation energy storage materials. This application note demonstrates how ePROBE’s and Bruker’s advanced NMR probe technology enables direct investigation of fully assembled coin cell batteries under working conditions. The note highlights practical workflows, probe design features, and representative operando data from NMC811/graphite cells assembled using stainless steel coin case. Combining operando solid-state NMR with coin cell formats provides practical, real-time insight into battery materials while accelerating development and improving understanding of performance-relevant processes.

Key points

  • Real‑time operando NMR resolves electrolyte, intercalated, and metallic Li species during cycling
  • Compatible coin‑cell probe design supports standard and custom casings with up to three shielded current‑collector ports.
  • Multinuclear capability provides detailed mechanistic insight crucial for battery‑materials optimization.
