We will explain how data analysis using the 3D international standard ISO 25178 norm can be exploited to rank surface properties and explain wear processes. The use of mean roughness and other areal roughness parameters to differentiate surfaces and quantify their efficiency for intended applications will be described including aesthetic appearance and corrosion resistance. Case studies from the automotive, sensors, optics and medical industries will be presented.
