Object Stages for in-situ examination

Several special purpose stages can be used for the SKYSCAN systems. The stages are easily installed in place of the standard specimen holder, and take control signals and power from a small plug at the base of the sample stage mount. These special stages are controlled by software independent of the main scanner control program.

Micro-Positioning Stages

Micro Positioning Stage, MicroCT

The micro-positioning stage is for SKYSCAN 1172, 1174 and 1275.

It helps to achieve exact positioning of small objects in the middle of the scanning field. Precise object centering improves all aspects of scan quality, enabling maximum magnification to be achieved and optimizing scan speed. This positioning stage has 5mm travel in the X and Y directions, and axial positioning is attained in a straightforward, user-friendly procedure, by reference to projection images. It contains an integrated microprocessor controller and two precision stepping motor drives. The stage is supplied with independent control software.

The micro-positioning stage is integrated in the SKYSCAN 1173, 1272 and 2211.

Cooling and Heating Stages

The cooling and heating stages, respectively, provide environments for micro-CT scanning under controlled object temperature above or below ambient.

The heating stage keeps an object at a temperature up to +85°C. The cooling stage keeps an object at sub-zero temperature down to 30-40°C below ambient. An internal microprocessor controls a solid-state cooling or heating system and measures the object temperature with <1°C accuracy.

Cooling or heating stages are powered and controlled through a small connector at the top of the object stage. The power and control signals are connected to the static part of the scanner through special gold contact slip rings with low friction and high reliability in endless rotation.

Material Testing Stages

The Material Testing Stage (MTS) allows combining micro-CT imaging with tensile and compression testing. During scanning the sample is subjected to a controlled load, while having the loading curve displayed on-screen in real time.

This material testing stages applies an accurate force measured by load cell with deformation measurements by precision displacement sensor. The stage can be used in 2 modes: a continuous mode for compression or tension up to the maximum allowable load or until the maximum displacement; and a predefined mode in which the user can specify either the load or the displacement that should be reached. The loading curve is displayed on-screen in real time; load/displacement or stress/strain curves can be displayed and saved. The object can be held under a specific single or multiple loading(s) for micro-CT scanning.

The stage can be fitted with a load cell having a different range. The accuracy of the measurement is around 1% of the load cell’s full scale. This is an important figure to bear in mind when choosing a load cell. The load cell’s range should be higher than the load the specimen will be exposed to, but an “oversized” load cell will have a negative effect on the system’s sensitivity. The load cell is installed and calibrated in factory and cannot be replaced by user.
