How to Read an FT-IR Spec Sheet — and What to Ignore: Making Smart Choices for Your Research

Modern FT-IR spectrometers come with impressive specification sheets: higher resolution, faster scanning, lower noise, wider spectral range, and a long list of technical parameters. But which of these numbers actually matter for your research—and which are mainly marketing language?

In this 40-minute Lunch & Learn session, we will discuss how to critically read FT-IR specification sheets and understand which parameters truly influence measurement quality and experimental possibilities.

What you’ll take away:

  • How to interpret spectral resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, and wavenumber accuracy
  • Which interferometer and detector specifications actually affect your data
  • Common misunderstandings and marketing traps in spec sheets
  • How to compare different FT-IR systems realistically
  • Practical tips to choose the right instrument configuration for your research

The goal is to help you move beyond impressive numbers and make smarter, application-driven decisions when evaluating FT-IR instrumentation.
