Wine

The global wine market will be worth over USD420 billion by 2023. Wine is a premium-priced commodity with price ranging from less than £5 a bottle in the mass volume market to well over £10K per bottle in the fine wine market. The retail value is determined by a host of factors including the origin, the varietal, and the year of production.

It is therefore of great importance to the wine industry to be able to authenticate its products. However, with over 10,000 grape varieties, monitoring the authenticity of wine has been a tremendous challenge. Although certain varietals carry premium prices, there was not a reliable test for confirming the varietal of a wine.

The ability of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to rapidly deliver either targeted or non-targeted analysis of a range of relevant parameters has enabled the development of a wine-profiling module to the Bruker NMR FoodScreener™.

This innovative technology for wine authenticity testing simultaneously measures a range of parameters without damaging the sample. A database of the characteristic NMR spectra for a range of authentic wines is being compiled. The spectra obtained from a test sample can thus be compared with those on the database to allow verification of variety, origin and vintage. The system can now also assign the region for several parts of France, Italy and Spain.
