In Situ Cryogenic Testing

Discover how experts are using PI Cryo to investigate low-temperature deformation processes

View this webinar to learn about how PI Cryo can facilitate understanding of deformation processes at cryogenic temperatures.

In this webinar, guest speaker Prof. Gregory Thompson and Senior Staff Scientist Sanjit Bhowmick, Ph.D. discuss thermally-activated deformation processes and the value of performing in-situ mechanical loading at cryogenic temperatures with PI Cryo. Three case studies are presented to showcase this capability and its insight into the mechanical behavior of materials at such low temperatures.

Webinar Summary

This webinar features guest speaker Prof. Gregory Thompson and Bruker Senior Staff Scientist Dr. Sanjit Bhowmick. Prof. Thompson is a University Distinguished Research Professor, Director of the Materials Science Ph.D. Program, and director of the Alabama Analytical Research Center (AARC).

Deformation processes are often thermally activated, including a reduction in plasticity and tendency towards fracture as temperatures drop. In this webinar, three case studies are presented that show how PI Cryo can be used to explore deformation caused by in situ mechanical loading under cryogenic conditions:

  • Observing detwinning behavior that has been linked to anti-thermal behavior via atomistic simulations
  • Identifying the ductile-to-brittle temperature transition in a variety of carbon steels, with some unanticipated outcomes
  • Performing pillar compression in an austenitic stainless steel, and comparing to ex situ cryogenic steel
