Mapping fMRI networks in the awake mouse

Webinar Overview

In this talk, Dr. Alessandro Gozzi will describe a protocol recently devised in his lab enabling the acquisition of high-quality rsfMRI timeseries in head-fixed, scanner-habituated mice, with negligible impact of stress and motion-related artefacts. He will illustrate differences and similarities in brain network organization between commonly used anaesthetic protocol and awake rsfMRI timeseries and will show how these relate to the underlying anatomical connectivity. Finally, he will illustrate how rsfMRI brain dynamics is instead largely different between anesthetized and conscious animals, revealing a putative dynamic “signature of consciousness” in the mouse.

Key Learning Objectives

  • Resting state fMRI
  • fMRI connectivity mapping
  • fMRI dynamics

Dr. Gozzi will illustrate how high quality rsfMRI timeseries can be acquired in head-fixed, restraint-habituated mice using standard gradient-echo EPI sequences. Experimental parameters critical to the success of these procedures will be discussed. He will also critically examine how rsfMRI networks change as a function of brain state, and why.

Speakers

Alessandro Gozzi, PhD

Senior Scientist at the Italian Institute of Technology

Alessandro Gozzi, PhD, is a senior scientist at the Italian Institute of Technology, in Rovereto, where he leads the functional neuroimaging laboratory. A major goal of Dr. Gozzi's research is to unravel the neural underpinnings and significance of brain-wide functional connectivity as measured with fMRI, and its disruption in brain disorders.
