Detection of KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae

A nightmare bacterium

K. pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC) is a member of the “BIG 5” carbapenemase gene family and the most important mechanism of carbapenem resistant K. pneumoniae (CRKP). CRKP belongs to the group of carbapenemase producing organisms (CPOs) harboring plasmid encoded blaKPC, which healthcare experts around the world refer to as “nightmare bacteria”.

It’s fast

The blaKPC genes that encode the KPC enzyme are present on transferable plasmids which easily can be exchanged between bacteria by horizontal gene transfer. This mechanism and the fact that CRKP resistance could spread rapidly between patients – if not detected in time – make it one of the most dangerous pathogens in healthcare settings.

Be faster

Efficient identification methods for laboratory testing, active surveillance and screening of patients are therefore in high need to avoid spreading of CRKP. The MBT Subtyping Module looks automatically for a blaKPC related peak in the sample spectrum after successful identification of K. pneumoniae. If present, the MALDI Biotyper will report this K. pneumoniae sample as a presumptive blaKPC positive.

The MBT Subtyping Module quickly detects blaKPC expressing  K. pneumoniae. Please note that negative results do not indicate that these strains are susceptible, but will require additional confirmation methods.

The MBT Subtyping Module detects also cfiA positive Bacteroides fragilis  strains and PSM-mec carrying Staphylococcus aureus  strains.
