Quantitative Nanoindentation and Nanotribology of Composite Materials

Composites comprise a diverse class of materials, where two or more dissimilar constituents are combined to form a material with unique characteristics. The performance of composite materials is governed by the properties of individual constituent materials, the spatial arrangement of these materials, and the interfacial properties between materials.

Nanoindentation and nanotribology are two commonly used techniques to characterize the mechanical and wear properties of composites. By providing the ability to quantitatively measure properties of individual material components and material interfaces within the composite, a constitutive understanding of bulk mechanical and tribological properties can be obtained for continued composite development.
