M1 MISTRAL, Compact Tabletop µ-XRF Spectrometer

Comparing Different Detectors for Analysis with the M1 MISTRAL

The detector selection for a Micro-XRF spectrometer should be based on the most frequent analytical tasks. For the analysis of unknown or only partially known samples with flexible qualitative composition and for the detection of smallest concentrations and thinnest layers, solid state detectors, such as SDD and PIN diode are the best choice.

However, prop counters (PC) are well suited for quality control with known qualitative composition or thicknesses greater than a certain minimum. Both detector types are very similar in terms of accuracy. The smaller statistical error of the PC is compensated by the SDD‘s reduced problem with overlaps. The detectors‘ performance regarding stability is similar.
