Teaching Undergraduates and Informing Cutting-Edge Neuroscience Research

In this research highlight, Sierra Miller, Ph.D., discusses her work at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, using miniscopes, the ProView Express Kit, and other techniques to study the neurocircuitry involved in feeding behavior. She also speaks on her transition to West Texas A&M University, where she is an Assistant Professor of Biology. Here, she is excited to continue her work with alternative neuropeptides and introduce undergraduate students to the field of neuroscience and the exciting tools that researchers can use to explore an array of scientific questions.

“It blows my mind every time I watch a miniscope video. Every time I get to see a recording, I'm like, this is why I do this. I'm really excited to get to expose undergraduates to all of these techniques that I had no idea existed when I was an undergrad—getting to bring that home and show them that we can image individual neurons in an animal while they're doing something.”

ABOUT THE RESEARCHER:

Sierra Miller, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Biology at West Texas A&M University (WTAMU) as well as WTAMU’s Faculty Director for the state of Texas’s Joint Admission Medical Program.

FIELD OF STUDY:

At West Texas A&M University, Sierra Miller, Ph.D., is continuing her research focused on explaining how different neuronal processes guide motivation. She will also spend much of her time teaching undergraduates about the fundamentals of biology, neuroscience, and available microscopy tools.
