MICROBIAL IDENTIFICATION

MALDI Biotyper® Library

The heart of the MALDI Biotyper® - enabling fast, accurate and reliable microorganism identification

MALDI Biotyper® Library

The principle behind identification of microorganisms with the MALDI Biotyper® (MBT) is the comparison of the mass spectrum of an unknown organism with a library of reference mass spectra.

Bruker has invested substantial resources to collecting as many species and obtaining as broad strain coverage as possible, to build up the most comprehensive libraries for users. As an ever-evolving platform, the MBT has a broader identification scope than all other molecular platforms.

The pillars of the MALDI Biotyper®

For the MALDI Biotyper® RUO/GP workflows, four different libraries are available

The MBT Compass reference library (version 2022) covers 4,274 species of 704 microorganism genera.

The Security-Relevant (SR) Library covers 12 highly pathogenic species from 10 genera.

The optional MBT Filamentous Fungi Module (version 2022) comes with a specific reference spectrum library for 222 species / species groups.

The optional MBT Mycobacteria Module holds a specific reference spectrum library for 182 of the currently known 201 mycobacteria species, covering the natural variability of Mycobacterium species.

The Open Microbiology concept

For research use only (RUO), Bruker’s unique open library concept allows laboratories looking to create their own library entries to make use of the optional MBT Explorer® Software Module, to compile customized libraries by creating reference spectra which can then be shared with fellow researchers.

This software module also offers multiple sophisticated bioinformatics for spectra comparison and statistical data interpretation, enabling users to optimize the microorganism classification process by creating, modifying and organizing data.
