Nanomechanical Testing Webinars

Dynamic Mechanical Characterization of Polymer Coatings and Thin Films via Nanoindentation

Join Yusuke Matsuda (DuPont Electronics and Industrial) for a review of NanoDMA III for industrial applications with comparisons to macroscale DMA

The time dependence in polymers is different from that of metals or ceramics. As a result, testing their mechanical properties requires a different approach than traditional indentation.

This webinar focuses on the verification of nanoscale dynamic mechanical analysis (nanoDMA III) for industrial polymer thin films using both time and temperature variation and in comparison to macroscale tensile DMA.

NanoDMA III for Polymeric Thin Films in Industrial Applications

The time dependence in polymers requires a different approach to that of traditional indentation of metals. The viscoelasticity, pressure dependence, and contact stiffness are all vastly different than that found in metals or ceramics, and must be taken into account.

In this webinar:

  • The nanoDMA III technique is reviewed, various tip geometries are compared, and experiments are performed using the TI 980 TriboIndenter, with xSol stage;
  • Yusuke Matsuda of DuPont Electronics and Industrial presents on his work verifying nanoscale dynamic mechanical analysis using both time and temperature variation;
  • Multiple approaches to doing small scale mechanics appropriate to polymers and polymetric thin films are reviewed, with comparisons made to macroscale tensile DMA; and
  • Results on industrially relevant materials systems that cannot be tested at the macroscale are presented.
