Classical biochemical techniques based on different metabolic characteristics of microorganisms typically take hours or even days, and often lack specificity. The MALDI Biotyper® systems provide high-speed, high-confidence identification and taxonomical classification of bacteria and yeasts. Classification and identification are based on proteomic fingerprinting using high-throughput MALDI TOF mass spectrometry; characteristic fingerprinting patterns are matched with an extensive MBT IVD reference library to identify the microorganism.
This allows an unbiased identification of microorganisms within a few minutes, down to the species level.
