Changing microbiology by faciliating research

MALDI Biotyper® for Microbial Research

The MALDI Biotyper® (MBT) is a microbial identification system based on Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), allowing unbiased identification of microorganisms within a few minutes down to the species level. The MBT is an easy, rapid, robust, high-throughput, cost-effective and efficient identification technology, ideally suited to microbiological research laboratories.

Identifying microorganisms by their molecular fingerprint

Due to its broad applicability, speed of analysis and low sample processing costs, the MBT is ideally suited to the role of fingerprinting microorganisms. MALDI-TOF MS determines the unique proteomic fingerprint of an organism, and matches characteristic patterns with an extensive reference library to determine the organism’s identity. Continued expansion of the reference library ensures that a broad range of microorganisms can be identified easily, and now includes 4,274 species of 704 microorganism genera (library version 2022).

Creating custom libraries

Laboratories wanting to create their own library entries can make use of the optional MBT Explorer Software Module to compile customized libraries. This module also offers multiple sophisticated bioinformatics analyses for spectra comparison and statistical data interpretation, enabling users to optimize the microorganism classification process by creating, modifying and organizing reference spectrum data.

This module provides capabilities not usually found in routine use, such as principle component analysis and correlation analysis. There is also a module for the identification of molds and multicellular fungi, as well as Mycobacteria.
