Microbial Identification for Clinical Laboratories (IVD-CE)

Unbiased and fast identification of microorganisms down to the species level

Identification of microorganisms

Significant advances in clinical microbiology have been achieved thanks to continuous innovations in mass spectrometry (MS) over the past decade. Now the standard in microorganism identification, Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-Of-Flight (MALDI-TOF) MS enables clinical microbiology laboratories to reliably and rapidly identify microbes, for diagnosing patient infections in a cost-effective manner.

A revolution in microbiology

Microorganisms identification to the species level is a key task of microbiology. Traditionally this is achieved by carrying out labour-intensive and time-consuming biochemical assays. And though current sequencing technologies may provide very precise insights, they are still far too slow and expensive. Bruker has successfully introduced an innovative, molecular-based mass spectrometric identification method that enables faster and more efficient analysis than conventional assays or sequencing.

By using our experience and expertise as a worldwide leading provider of MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, Bruker developed the MALDI Biotyper® - a revolutionary approach for the analysis of microorganisms. This "Open Microbiology Concept" can be easily integrated into any clinical laboratory environment. Within just a few years, the MALDI Biotyper® has become the worldwide leading solution for clinical microbiology, as well as for water, pharmaceutical and food testing.

MALDI Biotyper® - Changing clinical microbiology - faster, better, cost-effective

Bruker introduced the IVD-CE certified MALDI Biotyper® (MBT) solution in 2009 for clinical microbiology, and since then it has quickly become established as the method of choice for microorganism identification in routine clinical microbiology laboratories.
Fast and reliable identification of microorganisms is a key task in clinical microbiology. Classical biochemical techniques based on different metabolic characteristics of microorganisms typically take hours or even days, and often lack specificity. Using the MALDI Biotyper®, microbiologists can go from culture to identification within minutes.

The MALDI Biotyper® systems provide high-speed, high-confidence identification and taxonomical classification of bacteria and yeasts. Classification and identification are based on proteomic fingerprinting using high-throughput MALDI TOF mass spectrometry; characteristic fingerprinting patterns are matched with an extensive MBT IVD reference library to identify the microorganism.
This allows an unbiased identification of microorganisms within a few minutes, down to the species level. Numerous studies have demonstrated the higher accuracy, faster time-to-result and lower costs provided by MALDI Biotyper® systems compared to classical methods. Continuous expansion of the MBT IVD reference library ensures that all clinically relevant microorganisms as well as more challenging organisms are included.

Bruker's IVD-CE MALDI Biotyper® solutions

The best technology from the experts in mass spectrometry.
As the leader in MALDI-TOF technology it is of great importance to Bruker to design robust, compact high-performance platforms intended for extensive and routine use in the microbiology laboratory.
The MALDI Biotyper® is a modular system designed to be configured according to individual laboratory needs. Bruker offers laboratories the choice of the MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer that best fits their needs. Continuous hardware development has led to the 4th generation of Bruker's benchtop MALDI Biotyper® systems.

  • The MALDI Biotyper® IVD System based on the microflex® LT/SH MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer with a N2 laser providing 60 Hz repetition rate
  • The NEW MALDI Biotyper® sirius one IVD System, with Bruker´s proprietary lifetime* smartbeam™ solid state laser technology at 200 Hz repetition rate and positive ion mode. System improvements, including the newest electronics and high performance vacuum system, generate very fast target exchange.
  • The NEW MALDI Biotyper® sirius IVD System, with the same innovative improvements, smartbeam™ 200 Hz laser and positive as well as negative ion detection. The additional capability of analysis in negative ion mode broadens the research applications, such as the analysis of lipids (the negative ion mode is for Research Use Only).

*     Lifetime meaning 7 years or 500 million shots, whichever comes first.
